Yue Minjun

Yue Minjun is a renowned contemporary Chinese artist, known for his paintings, sculptures, and prints featuring his signature laughing self-portraits. His works often feature uniform pink faces, portraying a sense of unity while exploring various symbols, metaphors, signs, and daily life depictions. Yue Minjun’s art challenges social and cultural conventions, often taking a radical, abstract, ironic, and cynical approach to political issues and objects. He is frequently categorized as a part of the Chinese “Cynical Realist” movement, although he vehemently denies this label and asserts that his art represents a unique moment in history that is unclassifiable under any registered style.
